KATHMANDU, JAN 31 -

CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal accused the government of confining the press so as to prevent general public from knowing the government works that were against the constitution and law of the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Dhangai on Tuesday, Khanal said the government restricted the information as it could put the light on the government works, which are against the law and constitution, triggering an angry response from the citizens. He said his party sympathizes the struggle campaign for press freedom.

The government had issued a new classified information directive that restricts an individual, the media or any organisation from gaining 140 types of information, including those on big development projects, parliamentary decisions and major decisions of the government.

On a different context, Khanal said the House session will be obstructed until the government scraps the decision to legalise land transaction made by the parallel administration run by the then Maoist rebels during the decade long insurgency period. “We should take the obstruction of the House from the side of the government,” said Khanal.

He also said that UCPN (Maoist) reluctance to abide by the seven-point and six-point agreement has been delaying the process of peace and statute. He maintained that the country would be captured in a perilous situation in case of the failure to draft the statute by May 28.

He claimed that the present government, formed on the basis of four-point agreement, could not be transformed into a national consensus government. He also clarified that his party will not shoulder the federalism based on ethnicity and caste.
