KATHMANDU, JAN 30 -

Minster for Health and Population Rajendra Mahato on Sunday said the ministry is planning to provide specialised health services to people right from the district level hospitals.

Speaking at a programme held to mark the 16th anniversary of the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre (SGNHC) in the Capital, Mahato said many such specialised hospitals will be needed once the federal system is in place. Mahato also lauded the smooth functioning of the SGNHC at a time when many of the government-owned hospitals have been inflicted by politics.

Meanwhile, Dr Praveen Mishra, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), said that the SGNHC has done a remarkable job in serving the general public while there has been significant rise in the number of non-communicable diseases, especially cardio-vascular ones.

Dr Man Bahadur KC, director at the SGNHC, said that the hospital has lived up to the public’s expectations due to the dedication of the hospital staff. “That doesn’t mean the government should go on lauding our job without bringing any retention plans and programme for the doctors and other officials,” he said, requesting the government to show sincere interest in running the Post Graduate (PG) programme in Cardiology, Cardio-surgery and Cardio-anesthesia.

“Though the MoHP officials did not seem to be much interested in running the PG programme in the past, I am hopeful that the assurance I have got from the minister and the health secretary will translate into action this time,” he said.
