Bilateral boundary meet: Nepal-China border gets a bit longer
KATHMANDU, JAN 28 -
Nepal and China are holding a five-day boundary meeting in Xian, China, from February 1.
The expert-level talks are expected to settle two major border related issues between the two countries--height of Mt Everest and controversy surrounding the missing pillar no 57 of Lamabagar in Rasuwa district.
The meeting will also finalise the revised length of Nepal-China boundary. Officials from both sides have confirmed that length of the border between the two countries is 1,439 km according to the new measurement, while it was considered 1,414.5 km earlier.
The new measurement will slightly change the map of Nepal’s northern border. “Earlier we used to measure the border with small scales but we used modern GPS this time. This resulted in some variation in the border length,” a senior government official said. “But there is no change in the border position.”
Director General of the Survey Department, Krishna BC, is leading the Nepali side during the meeting.
A meeting of the Nepal-China Joint Inspection Committee should have been held last year to settle the issue but the meeting did not take place.
The talks will also try to figure out the tripartite border points of Nepal-India-China in Nepal’s Kalapani area.
As agreed, both sides will recognise the snow and rock heights of Mt Everest. However, Nepali officials will press for marking the snow height of the 8,848-metre peak in the upcoming protocol of border maps.
Nepali side has been pitching for marking the globally recognised snow height of Mt Everest in the upcoming digitalised maps.
The snow and rock height issue surfaced in the meeting held in Kathmandu in April 2009, after the Chinese State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping officially announced Everest’s height as 8,844.4 metres.
Nepal and China have prepared 57 sheets of border maps based on GPS technology. Likewise, both sides will also try to find out a common ground on missing pillar no 57 in Lamabara, Rasuwa.
