1,000 crows fall dead in a week in Biratnagar

BIRATNAGAR, JAN 27 -
A large number of crows have died of an unknown disease in Ward No 22 of Biratnagar sub-metropolitan city in the past a week.
Local people said around 1,000 crows died within the period. Dead crows are seen everywhere, in the farmland and gardens of houses. “I had never seen such a large number of birds die at a time in my life,” said local resident Jabir Alam.
The Regional Veterinary Laboratory (RVL), meanwhile, confirmed the crows did not die of bird flu. RVL Chief Dr Bolraj Acharya said they did find the bird flu virus while testing the samples. “The reason behind the deaths can be found out only after testing the samples in the laboratory of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology,” he said.
Dr Satya Narayan Chaudhary said the colour of the dead bird’s excreta is white-yellow and its head seems to have turned back while dying. “We cannot say the exact cause of the deaths only on the basis of the symptoms of the dying birds.
It may be due to poison consumption or a disease,” he said.
