Shiva Ram, Khadka, Thapa, Sharma in semis

Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha, defending champion Ram Thapa, Rabi Khadka and Surya Sharma advanced to the semi-finals of the Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play golf tournament at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Monday.
Thapa beat Jaya Ram Shrestha 2/1 (two up with one hole remaining), while Shiva Ram handed a 3/2 (three up with two hole remaining) defeat to Rajan Thapa in the quarter-finals. Rabi and Surya registered identical 3/2 victories over Rajan Thapa and Deepak Thapa Magar respectively. The eight pros played a total of 36 holes, 18 in the first round and another 18 in the quarters. In the semi-finals, Thapa will take on Khadka, while Shiva Ram will play against Sharma on Tuesday.
Earlier, Rajan, Surya, Deepak Thapa Magar, Deepak Neupane, Thapa, Khadka, Shiva Ram and Jaya Ram advanced to the quarter-finals. Rajan defeated Umesh Nagarkoti 3/2, while Sharma thrashed Mani Rai of Dharan 6/5. Deepak Thapa Magar edged Deepak Acharya 3/2, whereas Deepak Neupane beat Ramesh Nagarkoti 2/1.
Likewise, defending champion Ram defeated Pashupati Sharma in the last hole. Thapa beat Dharan’s Tham Bahadur Rai 3/2, whereas Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram edged CB Bhandari on the last hole. The match between Sanjay Lama and Jaya Ram was decided on the 19th hole after both the players were tied after the completion of 18 holes. Jaya Ram won the first playoff hole to advance to the quarter-finals. Top 16 pros—based on the 2010-11 Order of Merit—took part in the season’s ninth event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour. The winner of the Rs 200,000 tournament will receive Rs 50,000, while the runner-up get Rs 30,000. The third and fourth placed pros will receive Rs 22,000 and Rs 18,000 respectively. The losing quarter-finalists will get Rs 10,000 each, while the pros falling in the first round will pocket Rs 5,000 each.
