Truck mows down six of family
KATHMANDU, JAN 23 - Six members of a family were killed when a truck ran them over at Pakali in Sunsari district on Monday.
The accident took place at around 5:30 am when the Birtamod-bound truck ran over the family waiting for a bus, police said. The family had come to see off two of its members, who were supposed to take a bus to Kathmandu.
Three of the victims died on the spot, while the others succumbed to injuries at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
The police identified the victims as Krishna Raut, 67, his wife Tara, 62, their son Baburam, 42, daughter-in-law Sharada, 32, daughter Kamala KC, 28, and her seven-year-old daughter, Shilu. Krishna's 14-year-old grandson Sishir sustained minor injuries.
The Rauts are permanent residents of Pakali VDC-3 of Sunsari. Krishna's daughter Kamala, who was married in Kathmandu, was visiting her parents with her daughter.
According to the police, the truck overturned after hitting the victims and its driver, Ramsaran Chaudhary, fled leaving behind his assistant Ramesh Kharel, who was arrested by the police. Chaudhary later turned himself in to the police.
In his statement to the police, Chaudhary said he had dozed off while driving and came to his senses after hitting the victims. He said he tried to control the vehicle right after the accident, but crashed a few metres away.
Police later found out that Chaudhary had been driving for over eight hours at a stretch in the night.
