BUTWAL, JAN 22 -

Yeti Himalayan Sherpa Club have boosted their chance of finishing in the second position in the Red Bull National League following their 2-1 win over Nepal Army Club in Butwal on Saturday.

Himalayan, the youngest member in the topflight, have done all there is to be done to realise their dreams, but they still need to wait for the outcome of the match between Manang and Police on Sunday to confirm their desired position. A wining result for Police against Manang would favour Himalayan’s chances.

With today’s win, Himalayan have moved up the ladder to second with 19 points at the completion of all their games but Manang, at third with 16 points with one game in hand, remains a constant threat to Himalayan’s

ambitions because of Manang’s better goal difference. For Himalayan’s coach Upendra Man Singh the team’s current status in the standings in itself is an achievement because of the club’s improvement from fifth in the previous league to third in the current one. “We are very happy to finish in top three position. Let’s see if we can secure second position.”

Nepal Army, meanwhile, ended the tournament at fifth. The club had aimed for a top four finish, but Army’s coach Yogamber Suwal is pleased with his team’s faring in the event. “I don’t want to complain about anything. The boys played well and we hope the best in the upcoming Aaha Gold Cup,” said Suwal.

All was well for Army till the first 45 minutes. They had taken a 19th minute lead through Amrit Basnet and their defense was doing a fine job, keeping the classy front lineup of Himalayan at bay. But in the second half, the Army men fell apart. South Korean high-school student Jiang Byoung breached the Army defense in the 62nd minute to restore

parity in the match when he connected a cross from Nabin Neupane. The equaliser changed the complexion of the match completely.

Himalayan were suddenly the bubbling side. Exerting tremendous pressure on their opponents, Himalayan got their reward in the final minute of the three-minute stoppage time through Dipak Rai.  In the second match of the day, Mitra Milan Club got their usual dose of hammering for the last time, suffering a 6-1 loss against Mega Three Star Club.

A hat-trick from Isah and a goal each from Bikram Lama, Subin Shrestha and Vishan Gauchan made sure Three Star finished at sixth with 13 points.
