Thai woman held with cocaine
KATHMANDU, JAN 05 -
In what is the first instance of confiscation of cocaine in the country, police arrested a Thai national, Suparerat Mcintosh, 36, with 1 kg of cocaine from Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu on Wednesday.
Narcotics Drugs Control Law Enforcement Unit held her at 11:30 pm in possession of the contraband drugs, considered one of the most expensive globally. She was about to board a flight to Malaysia and then to Bangkok.
According to police, having begun her journey on December 18 from Bangkok, she had made a trip to many countries including Indonesia, Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Qatar before landing in Kathmandu on January 2.
Mcintosh, who is supposed to have travelled to many places to avoid suspicion of crime, collected the drugs from Peru, said SP Sher Bahadur Basnet, Chief of Narcotics Drugs Control Law Enforcement Unit.
"She must have chosen Nepal in order to avoid suspicion since cocaine is not produced here," he said. Basnet further added that she must have been assigned to make a deal of drug she was carrying either in Malaysia, or in Bangkok itself.
She was about to be paid 0.2 million dollars for a successful drug dealing, a statement issued by police on Thursday read, "Cocaine has never been confiscated from Nepal before this."
She was taken into custody; first, by the airport police after her frequent travel record to many countries seemed murky. "During interrogation, we found she was carrying canned cocaine in her baggage," said Basnet. "She was immediately arrested and taken to Metropolitan Police Range, Hanuman Dhoka for further prosecution."
