Basantapur tourist fees go up

KATHMANDU, JAN 04 -

Entrance fees for tourists visiting Basantapur Durbar Square, a world heritage site, has been hiked. The Department of Archaeology (DoA) and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City reached a decision to rack up the charge.

From now onwards, SAARC nationals have to pay Rs 150 instead of earlier’s Rs 100. Fees for non-SAARC citizens have increased to Rs 750 from Rs 500. Even though the fees were hiked in August last year, the change has been implemented with the beginning of this year.

Manager of KMC’s Hanuman Dhoka Area Conservation, Hari Kumar Shrestha, said the increment is a nominal sum as a large chunk of fee revenue goes to the DoA.

Out of the total fees that each SAARC citizen pays, the DoA takes Rs 100 and

Rs 500 from non-SAARC nationals so the hike was necessary for adjustment, Shrestha said. More than 300 foreigners visit the Durbar Square area every day.

Similarly, the Hanuman-dhoka Museum administration has also hiked the entrance fees for tourists from Rs 20 to Rs 30. Students will have to pay Rs 15 and Rs 10 on Fridays and Saturdays. Earlier, the museum administration had made free entrance for students on the two days.
