60 party poppers held on New Year Eve for drunken driving
KATHMANDU, JAN 02 -
For some late-night party poppers, it was the worst start of the New Year while they rang in 2012. The Metropolitan Police Range (MPR) arrested 60 motorcyclists and four car drivers on Saturday, the New Year Eve, for driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to police, security personnel were mobilised in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley, including Durbarmarg, Tinkune, Kalimati, Babarmahal, Balkhu, Gaushala, Thapathali, Sukedhara, Gongabu and Banasthali, from 10 pm to
2 am to keep a check on drunk drivers.
The arrestees were kept in the custody for an hour and released after they were taught a lesson on traffic rules. Documentaries were also shown to make them understand the awful consequences of drinking and driving.
The arrested were freed after collecting details about their personal life, license, and a fine of Rs 1,000. Police said there were no fatal cases in the accidents related to the revelry.
“It is too much to control drink and drive on the occasions like New Year Eve. Amid such cold it is quite impossible to celebrate without a glass of booze,” said Bartaman Maharjan, 26-year-old resident of Gaushala. He was enjoying the New Year Eve at Atic Bar, near Lazimpat.
Police officers say strict checking helps prevent road accidents on such occasions.
DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police Range, said that on the New Year Eve last year two motorcyclists lost their lives as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol. However, no serious accidents took place in the valley this time.
Singh said police were a little flexible with couples during the checking, as they were travelling
with their partners. However, tight checking will be on their toes in other days, he said.
The MPR mobile team has already arrested more than 1,000 drives under the influence of alcohol and fined Rs 1,100 each in the last 25 days.
