PAC enquires about misuse of combatants' salary
KATHMANDU, DEC 29 - The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Constituent Assembly has expressed concern over the misuse of funds in the name of Maoist PLA combatants missing from the cantonments.
PAC on Thursday summoned Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Satya Pahadi, secretary at the ministry, among other officials, to discuss the same.
Lawmakers represented in the committee, other than those from the UCPN (Maoist), had been voicing for a thorough investigation into the case.
Earlier, reports dessiminated in the media unveiled that the Maoist party had been drawing over Rs 24 million monthly in the name of allowances for some 3,000 combatants who had actually gone missing.
PAC had summoned Special Committee Secretariat Coordinator Balananda Sharma on Jan 8 to enquire about the same. The committee had also asked for information about the Indian nationals in PLA ranks which recently came to light in media.
Minister Pahadi had informed the PAC that due to the lackluster nature of the options put forth to the combatants, pregnancy and injury, among others, many PLA combatants could not show up in the regrouping process. She also clarified that there were no Indian nationals in the PLA as reported in the media.
