Govt to provide Rs. 1 million to Manbir’s family

KATHMANDU, DEC 27 - The government on Tuesday decided to provide one million rupees to the family of Manbir Sunar who was killed by two members of the so-called upper class for lighting a cigarette in their oven. A Cabinet meeting held in Singha Durbar on Tuesday morning took the decision to this effect.

Various organisations associated with the Dalit community had been demanding that the government declare Sunar a martyr, provide compensation to Sunar's family and book the guilty.

On December 10, Manbir, 31, was beaten to death by two men in an eatery in Kalikot. Under the influence of alcohol, Mim Bahadur Shahi and Dip Bahadur Shahi had severely thrashed Sunar as the latter lit a cigarette in the oven belonging to Shahi.

The meeting has also decided to set up a special mechanism at the Prime Minister's Office to monitor cases of violence against Dalits.

The Cabinet also decided to provide Rs 10 million to the Federation of Nepali Journalists to construct its building. Likewise, families of cold wave victims will be provided Rs 25,000 each as relief.

The meeting also endorsed the resignation of tendered by Health Secretary Sudha Sharma, who had resigned due to dissatisfaction over transfer.

The government has appointed senior advocate Umesh Chandra Jha as the chairman of the Nepal Law Commission and Prachanda Raj Pradhan as its vice-chairman.

The Cabinet also appointed six members in the University Grants Commission.

The appointees are Vice-chancellors Hira Bahadur Maharjan of Tribhuvan University and Maheshwor Man Shrestha of Purbalchal University, Dr Shiva Sharan Maharjan, Bidhya Nath Koirala, Mahendra Singh and Chri Shova Tamrakar.

The government has formed a committee headed by Devi Khadka to study modernization of prisons. Members in the committee include former AIG Ramesh Kumar Shrestha, Bhagwat Chaudhary, advocate Sunil Ranjan Singh and director of the Department of Prison Management. Likewise, the administrator of Public Service Pension Fund Ramesh Kumar Bhattarai and Executive Director of Railway Company Suresh Kumar Yadav have been relieved from their respective posts.
