100 pc decline in road deaths
KATHMANDU, DEC 27 -
The drive against drink-driving and removal of concrete road dividers have significantly decreased road accidents, fatalities and injuries in the last two months, compared to the preceding period, police data shows.
The fatality rate has declined by nearly 100 percent in the last two months (October 15 to December 15) compared to the same period from mid-August to mid-October. The fatalities recorded between October 15 and December 15 show that 18 people died in the Kathmandu Valley in 923 road accidents. The death toll was 34 in 1,100 cases of accidents between July 15 and October 15. The rate of road deaths before initiation of the campaign was four persons a week, which decreased to two a month.
Similarly, 72 people were seriously injured and 609 sustained minor injuries in the past two months, whereas 145 people got serious injuries and 1,009 sustained minor injuries from July 15 to October 15 this year.
“The joint effort of the traffic police and the Metropolitan Police Range (MPR) has finally begun to pay off,” said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ganesh Raj Rai, chief of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD). “But it could not have been possible without public cooperation.”
In 20 days of our campaign against drink-driving, we haven’t had any repeated offenders, said DIG Rai. Likewise, MTPD has been moving concrete dividers from the areas with heavy vehicular movement in the Valley for the past three months.
Drink-driving and the concrete dividers were major causes of fatalities.
Meanwhile, MPR mobile team has arrested 1,026 drivers under the influence of alcohol and fined Rs 1,000 each in the last 20 days. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dhiraj Pratap Singh of MPR, Rs 1.26 million has been collected as penalty from the drunk drivers. DSP Singh said that 69 drivers were arrested on the Christmas Eve alone. “The arrestees were kept in custody for the whole night before releasing the next morning with reprimand,” he said.
