House stalled over row
KATHMANDU, DEC 27 - The parliament was stalled for the third consecutive day on Tuesday due to the government's inability to engage with lawmakers who are agitating over the murder of a Dalit individual in Kalikot district.
Speaker Subas Nembang had delivered a ruling asking the government to furnish explanation over the killing of Manbir Sunar of Jubitha VDC in Kalikot. Sunar was reportedly beaten to death after he entered the kitchen of local Bal Kumari Shahi to light a cigarette on December 10.
Dalit lawmakers were demanding explanation from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bijay Kumar Gachhadar on the incident. On Tuesday, the Cabinet decided to provide Rs 1 million as relief to the bereaved family.
"The agitating lawmakers are not satisfied with the government's decision, stating that it had taken the decision unilaterally," said Nembang. Environment Minister Hemraj Tated had tried to engage with the Dalit CA members ahead of Tuesday's House session but failed to convince them.
The House session was put off by publishing a notice as the two sides could not find a compromise even in four and a half hours from the schedule. The next session is slated for Thursday.
