KATHMANDU, DEC 26 -

A large enthusiastic crowd graced the third Kathmandu Post Babaal Weekends at Civil Mall in Sundhara with their presence and welcomed the Christmas Eve with open arms. Cheerful faces descended on the venue who later got caught up in the festive mood. Along with live performances and other activities, there was a Santa Claus handing

out gifts to those who had lined up to see him.

The Central Food Court at the mall was festively decorated with Christmas trees and various holiday-themed food items on offer as well as a photo exhibition and face painting and portrait sketching stalls. And providing ambience was renowned singer Deepak Bajracharya and his band, Rhythm, comprising Rojan and Firoj on guitar, Ricky on drums, Bicky on bass and Milesh Tandukar and Rupendra Shaya playing traditional instruments like dhime, tabala, khin, bhushya, tunkirine and damaru, who enthralled the audience with their lively tunes.

The band set the ball rolling with the song “Angalo Ko Maya”

from their new album “On Rush”. But when they started up playing their popular old hits “O’ Meara, Kali Kali Hissi Paraki” and “Maya Ko Dore Lay” slowly the cool audience (especially ladies) went charging up to the front and took to the floor shedding their coyness.

Every time a song got over, Bajracharya called the children who were clutched  onto  their parents’ hands to the stage and handed them Christmas gifts. “I am really, really…happy to get a Santa’s hat as a gift,” shared a content Rojina Shakya, a little child who was enjoying pizza with her parents at the Food Court. The singer also gave away free cash vouchers to some fun lovers enjoying food along with the live music.

A middle-aged Philipiino woman, Shieryll, who had stepped into the stage and shaked her belly in the Jypsy beat with Bajracharya said, “It is my first time in Nepal. I don’t understand Nepali at all, but the music that was played on the stage is really alluring.” After Shieryll’s boogieing, everyone followed her with whistles and claps, turning the event truly into a babaal.

“The Central Food Court had never seen such a big crowd before. It was really a huge and this is why I would like to call it a real babaal”, said Nishant Shrestha, the marketing chief of the mall. According to Shrestha, the in and out crowd in total crossed above 2,500.

Then last but not least, it was Hem Lama and the Band to stir the blood to make the Christmas Eve more babaal. Before that, the first starter of The Kathmandu Post Babaal Weekends was Kutumba followed by Abhay and The Steam Injuns.

Till next Saturday a top band (name top secret) will be performing to make it a huge babaal. Are you ready for a bumper babaal?
