Cold spell on; nine dead in 24 hours
KATHMANDU, DEC 24 -
A cold spell has claimed dozens of lives in various Tarai districts. The rising death toll piles pressure on the government that has been issued a show cause notice by the Supreme Court on its “failure” to prevent cold-related deaths.
Six people reportedly died due to hypothermia in Saptari in the past 24 hours, taking the number of deaths in the district to 12. In Siraha, three persons died of cold on Thursday night, police said. One of the dead is said to be an inmate at the District Prison.
Meanwhile, health institutions in various districts have reported a significant rise in the number of patients suffering from cold-related ailments like pneumonia and diarrhoea. Schools in Rukum district have been shut due to excessive cold while tourist flow in Mustang has been minimal. Most hotels and inns in the district are vacant as foreign guests returned to Pokhara to flee the cold. Residents of Upper Mustang, meanwhile, are also migrating to the lower region.
Families in Ilam who lost their homes in the September 18 earthquake have urged the government to provide them with blankets for warmth under tarpaulin shelters. They have complained that the government’s relief programme too tardy and inefficient.
