Superstitious belief kills one in Rupandehi
EKANTIPUR REPORT, DEC 23 -
Normal life in Rupandehi district has been crippled on Friday due to the strike called by the United Struggle Committee (USC) protesting against the murder of local Manbir Sunar.
Sunar, of Kalikot, Juthiwa-6, was killed merely in the name of touching a hearth due to superstitious belief.
Rupandehi-Dalit Mukti Morcha, Nepal Dalit Sangh along with Samata Samaj, jointly proclaimed the strike demanding to declare Sunar a martyr, compensation to Sunar’s family, and to book the guilty.
Transportation has come to a grinding halt along the Siddhartha highway, East-West highway and the adjoining areas due to the strike.
Entire market areas, academic institutions, industries have been shut down in the district.
However, the protestors have allowed ambulances, press, to ply the roads.
The USC had submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai who had reached Butwal on Thursday claiming that the government turned deaf ear to the incident at the time when it has already declared Nepal a ‘Discrimination Free Nation.’
