Dalit lawmakers obstruct House
KATHMANDU, DEC 22 -
Dalit lawmakers obstructed the Legislature-Parliament meeting accusing the government of remaining silent about the murder of Manbir Sunuwar. Manbir Sunuwar, a man from a Dalit community, was killed for entering the kitchen of a hotel run by a ‘high-caste’ family in far western district of Kalikot.
CPN-UML lawmaker Chhabilal Bishwokarma along with other Dalit and UCPN (Maoist) lawmakers boycotted the meeting.
The lawmakers obstructed the meeting saying that the guilty were not punished yet, and that the government is remaining a mute-spectator on the issue. They also said that the police interfered when the Dalit activists were demonstrating for the same.
The House session was put off following the obstruction.
Sunuwar, a low-caste Dalit, was beaten to death after the locals accused him of entering into the kitchen of a hotel run by Jas Bahadur Shahi, who is considered one of the high-caste in the locality.
Dalit communities have been staging demonstrations across the nation protesting against the incident.
