Anti-corruption law will be amended, says law minister
KATHMANDU, DEC 22 -
Minister for Law and Justice Brijesh Kumar Gupta has said preparations are being made to amend the Corruption Control Act, paving the way for people to file corruption charges against justices.
Speaking at an interaction in the Capital on Wednesday, Gupta said the existing corruption prevention act does not imagine corruption in private and judicial sectors. The minister said he has initiated discussion with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai for amending the Act. Properties owned by justices should be made public in order to investigate corruption in the sector, he added.
Claiming rampant corruption and “elite self-recruitment” in the judicial sector, Gupta said he will control corruption in judiciary if he gets enough support from the Judicial Council.
“I can’t give the exact number but there are a lot of corrupt officials in judiciary. An Act is necessary to control it. I can take the names of corrupt judges if need be. However, I hope, I will not be compelled,” said Gupta. Clarifying that he had not raised the matter for the sake of popularity, Minister Gupta said that reports from corruption watch dogs like Transparency International show Nepal’s judiciary is corrupt. He also appealed to everyone to help him curb corruption.
