KATHMANDU, DEC 21 -

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has decided to hike electricity tariff by 20 per cent from comming Nepali month of Magh.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai during a meeting with the personnel from the Electricity Tarrif Fixation Commission agreed in principle to hike the tariff on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the prime minister urged the commission members to curb irregularities in the NEA and strengthen the management, NEA Chairman Ganesh Prasad Subba informed.

The NEA is bearing a loss of Rs 28 billion annually.

With NEA seeking to operate all diesel plants on its own during winters to reduce load-shedding hours, it has sought a separate mechanism to manage the power generated from such plants. NEA has maintained that it cannot sell the electricity generated from diesel plants at the usual rate of Rs 7 per unit, as it costs Rs 22 per unit to produce power from such plants.
