'UML ready to accept Thapa-led natl govt'
KATHMANDU, DEC 20 -
CPN-UML Secretary Shankar Pokharel on Tuesday said parties have no alternatives but to form a national consensus government led by either UCPN (Maoist) General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa or the Nepali Congress (NC) for timely completion of constitution and peace process.
Pokharel, however, ruled out possibility of transforming the current Baburam Bhattarai-led government into a national consensus one arguing that the prime minister himself backtracked towards four-point agreement, abandoning seven-point agreement signed for the formation of a national consensus government.
“The peace and statute drafting processes will not be completed within the stipulated timeframe if the Maoist leadership fails to convince the hardline faction led by Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya,” Pokharel told journalists at his residence, adding, “So, our party is ready to accept Thapa as prime minister if the Maoist leadership assures of completing the ongoing processes of peace and statute drafting.”
A UML faction, however, has been advocating the option of joining the Bhattarai-led government and making it a national consensus one if the four-point agreement signed with the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha is scrapped and new basis to invite the NC and the UML into the government is created.
Stating that the intra-party rift within parties was a major challenge in completing the constitution and peace processes, Pokharel said the recent unity among rival leaders in his party was the result of realization among the senior leaders.
“The divided political parties seem to be losing their control over the Constituent Assembly, which has been leading them towards failure to produce constitution and deliver peace,” he said, adding that party's senior leaders who are out of CA should be made CA member.
He said his party chairman's plan to bring three senior leaders-- KP Sharma Oli, Bamdev Gautam and Amrit Kumar Bohara-into the Constituent Assembly had also given a message to people that key leaders of all parties have been united to accomplish the assigned job.
He also informed that the senior party leaders were still diving on whether to invite Oli as CA member or not for short time period.
