NC calls off agitation programmes
EKANTIPUR REPORT, DEC 19 - The Nepali Congress (NC) called off the general strike after the government assured to meet its demands including withdrawal of charges against the party cadres.
NC General Secretary Prakash Man Sing informed that his party decided to call off all its agitation programmes including Monday’s general strike after the government issued a press statement announcing to withdraw the charges against Tarun Dal cadres and declare Shiva Poudel, Chitwan Chairman of NC youth wing Tarun Dal, a martyr.
“However, our peaceful agitation would continue until the charges were dropped and decease Poudel was declared a martyr,” Singh told eKantipur. Vehicles began to ply the roads after the strike was called off.
Home Ministry Spokesperson Shanker Koirala made public the government assurances at a press conference in the Ministry.
The government has agreed to declare Poudel a martyr after the probe panel formed to look into the incident comes up with reports.
Meanwhile, Congress agreed to receive the body of Poudel, who succumbed to his injuries he sustained in attack by inmates of Chitwan District Prison on December 6.
According to Singh, Poudel’s body would be kept at TU Teaching Hospital on Tuesday for offering last tribute to him and would taken later for the last rites.
Poudel, who was detained at Chitwan Prison for custodial remand for his alleged role in the murder of UML-aligned Youth Association Nepal cadre, was attacked while he was sleeping.
The NC that took to agitation following Poudel’s demise on Saturday have demanded the government form a probe panel to look into the incident, take stern against the guilty, declare Poudel a martyr, provide compensation to his family, and drop charges against Tarun Dal cadres including Poudel and Pramish Rai.
