KATHMANDU, DEC 18 -

Minister for Information and Communications Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta on Friday resigned from the Constitutional Council (CC) as its member.

Writing on a social networking site, Minister Gupta confirmed his resignation from the post on moral ground. “Good bye Constitutional Council! Why should I be a problem for other good men?” Gupta wrote on his Facebook wall.

Prior to this, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s Financial Advisor Rameshwor Khanal, Suryanath Upadhayay and Bhojraj Pokhrel, among others, had submitted a memorandum seeking Gupta’s removal from the council. They argued that Gupta should not be allowed to remain in the council with an authority to appoint commissioners at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) while the anti-graft body had filed a corruption case against him at the court. The council has been preparing to appoint office bearers in the CIAA, the Election Commission, the Public Service Commission and the Office of the Auditor General.

Gupta claimed that charges of corruption against him were prejudiced.
