KATHMANDU, DEC 18 - A meeting of the major four political forces—Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM)—is underway at the Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu.
The meeting is expected to discuss various political issues, including recruitment of Madhesi youths in the Nepal Army and the Monday’s general strike, called by the main opposition NC.
Earlier today, the NC had organised a press conference to announce that the tomorrow’s general strike was still effective as the government failed to meet the party’s four-point demand. Following the death of the Shiva Poudel, the Chitwan district president of the NC’s dissolved sister wing—Nepal Tarun Dal, the main opposition party had put forth four-point demand seeking proper investigation into the incident, proper retribution to the guilty, Poudel to be announced a martyr and withdrawing of the accusations on Poudel.
Poudel was doing time in the charge of murder in the Chitwan District Prison when he was suddenly attacked on December 6. He passed away yesterday morning while undergoing treatment at the Neuro Hospital in Kathmandu.
