Big three, SLMM meet inconclusive
KATHMANDU, DEC 18 - A meeting of the major four political forces—Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM)—held at the Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu ended inconclusively on Sunday.
The meeting discussed various political issues, including recruitment of Madhesi youths in the Nepal Army and the Monday’s general strike, called by the main opposition NC. However, the leaders failed to arrive at consensus after the NC remained adamant on its demands.
Earlier today, the NC had organised a press conference and had announced that the tomorrow’s general strike was still effective as the government failed to meet the party’s four-point demand. Following the death of the Shiva Poudel, the Chitwan district president of the NC’s dissolved sister wing—Nepal Tarun Dal, the main opposition party had put forth four-point demand seeking proper investigation into the incident, proper retribution to the guilty, Poudel to be announced a martyr and withdrawing of the accusations on Poudel.
Poudel was doing time in the charge of murder in the Chitwan District Prison when he was attacked on December 6. He passed away yesterday morning while undergoing treatment at the Neuro Hospital in Kathmandu.
According to PM’s advisor Devendra Poudel, the government denied to announce NC leader Shiva Poudel a martyr although it showed some flexibility regarding the withdrawal of accusations against him.
“The government’s attention was drawn towards the case withdrawal,” said PM’s advisor. “The government said [at the meeting] that if there was injustice, the case could be reconsidered.” But the NC remained adamant on its stance to announce Shiva as a martyr, he added. “We [the government] were of view that the announcement of martyr would leave a wrong image.”
Meanwhile, the participated leaders in the meeting agreed to decide on issuance of citizenship after discussing the citizenship bill with Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, and legal experts.
