BAITADI, DEC 18 -

At least 14 people were killed in a bus accident at Srikedar VDC-1 along the Mahakali Highway in Baitadi district on Saturday night. Six persons sustained serious injuries while some others are believed to be missing in the accident.

The ill-fated bus (Na 4 Kha 5943) skidded off the road and fell some 250 metres down a cliff at around 7:45 pm. The vehicle was heading to Mahendranagar in Kanchanpur from Darchula.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Bishnu Bahadur Karki, 14 persons, including six women were killed in the accident. The death toll could rise, he added. Only Dan Singh Thapa of Bhimdutta Municipality-6 has been identified dead till late night.

The local people said the number of the deceased could be higher. There were reportedly more than 40 passengers on board when the accident occurred.

A police team and Nepal Red Cross members reached the accident site for the rescue. The rescue has been difficult since the incident took place in the night-time and the vehicle fell down a cliff into a bush, police said.

The injured passengers were taken to Dadeldhura.

In a similar accident some two months ago, 41 passengers were killed when an overcrowded passenger bus swerved from the road and tumbled on a Sunkoshi River bank at Purano Jhagajholi-4, Sindhuli district, along the BP Highway.
