KATHMANDU, DEC 18 - The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has reiterated that the nationwide general strike called for Monday would be enforced citing the government’s failure to meet its demands.

Organising a press conference at the residence of party President Sushil Koirala Maharajgunj, Kathmandu on Sunday, the NC announced that the general strike would be effective as the government did not address its demands following the demise of its youth leader.

“The entire party and the nation has been left stunned following the demise of Nepal Tarun Dal Chitwan President Shiva Poudel who, along with his fellow cadres, was attacked in police detention with the involvement of government,” read the statement.

The NC condemned the incident saying that the administration jailed “innocent Poudel” for a false charge in a premeditated manner and ordered his murder.

Poudel’s demise has raised a number of questions including the security of general public and all the inmates held in detention.

The party has appealed to the entire democratic people, industries, vehicles and educational institutions to expressed solidarity with its strike.

However, the party has decided to allow ambulances, vehicles of press, diplomatic offices, human rights, tourists, garbage and milk to ply the road.

Earlier today, NC representatives met Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and handed over a four-point demand including investigation into the incident, stern action against the guilty, withdrawal of charges levelled against Poudel and compensation to his family and declaring him a martyr.

However, PM Bhattarai said that no further step could not be taken unless a full account of the incident is presented by the investigation team.

On Saturday, the Cabinet meeting had already decided to hand over a million rupees to Poudel’s family and form a three-member probe commission under the coordination of former Justice Mohan Sitaula.

After the meeting, NC Central Committee member Arjun Narsingh KC said that PM Bhattarai is positive towards the demand. “We asked him what the problem is pronouncing him as a martyr. He said that the privilege has been misused. He has asked for some time to discuss,” said KC.

KC along with NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary Pakash Man Singh, Khum Bahadur Khadka, and Gagan Thapa were present in the meeting.

The NC leaders have said that a press conference would be summoned at party President Sushil Koirala’s residence to publicise about tomorrow’s strike if the government fails to address the demands

NC has also formed its own five-member investigation committee including General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Bal Krishna Khand, Krishna Chandra Nepali, Chandra Bhandari, and Shankar Bhandari.

Various NC-affiliated sister organisations took to demonstrations in various parts of the country immediately after the demise of Tarun Dal President Poudel on Saturday, throwing the normal life out of gear.

Poudel was attacked by other inmates in the Chitwan Prison in the wee hours of December 6.

Critically injured Poudel was later brought to Neuro Hospital in the Capital where he breathed his last. He was detained at the prison for custodial remand for his alleged involvement in the murder of CPN-UML aligned Youth Association Nepal central member Sanjaya Lama.
