KATHMANDU, DEC 17 -

Nepali Congress (NC) affiliated Tarun Dal Chitwan Chairman Shiva Prasad Poudel who was critically injured in Chitwan Prison attack on Dec 6 succumbed to his injuries at the Neuro Hospital in the Capital on Saturday at 3 in the morning.

Poudel, who was receiving treatment at the Bharatpur Medical College, was flown to Kathmandu for further treatment after the treatment in Bharatpur failed to improve his health condition.

Condemning the death of Poudel, NC has called  Nepal bandh today. The NC Central Committee (CC) meeting held at party President Sushil Koirala’s residence in Maharajgunj following the death of Poudel called the bandh. The meeting also demanded the formation of a high-level probe committee and  investigation into the prison attack.

NC cadres took to the streets in the capital burning tyres and obstructing transportation and demanded the resignation of the prime minister and the home minister.

A group of inmates in Chitwan Prison had perpetrated a daring attack on Dec 6 targeting Poudel who was on a custodial remand.

NC-aligned Nepal Tarun Dal President Poudel, Pradip Bhatta, Madan Pariyar, Hari Gurung and Badri Dhungana suffered serious injuries in the attack.

The Home Ministry had suspended eight persons including acting Chief District Officer of Chitwan Nandi Kishor Tripathi, Chitwan Police Chief Khilu Acharya, among others, over the district prison clash.

Police have strengthened security in the capital to avert any unwanted situation from happening.

Meanwhile, Tarun Dal activists have shut down Chitwan since early morning, blaming the government and police administration for Poudel’s death.

They demanded that the guilty be arrested at the earliest, the dead be declared a martyr and the victim’s family be given compensation.
