General strike called off from evening
KATHMANDU, DEC 17 -
The general strike, called today by Tarun Dal and Nepal Students Union (NSU), sister wings of Nepali Congress (NC), has been called off after the NC requested for the same. NC requested to withdraw the strike citing that the party had not authenticated the decision.
The strike was called on Monday morning as a protest against the death of NC affiliated Tarun Dal Chitwan Chairman Shiva Prasad Poudel.
Poudel was critically injured in the Chitwan Prison attack on Dec 6 and was undergoing treatment at the Neuro Hospital in the Capital this morning. He died at the Neuro Hospital at 3 this morning.
NC Central Committee member Arjun Narsingh KC had directed to call off the strike stating that the sudden strike hampered the daily life of the public. “We have officially decided to call for a strike on Monday. Today’s sudden decision for strike has hampered the daily life of the people, so we have requested to withdraw it,” said KC.
The CWC meeting held at party President Sushil Koirala's residence this morning formed a five-member probe committee under the coordination of party General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula.
The committee includes Krishna Chandra Nepali, Bal Krishna Khad, Chandra Bhandari and Shanker Bhandari.
Meanwhile, Poudel's last rites will be performed in Chitwan on Sunday.
