Govt to pay rents for squatters: Land Reform Minister
KATHMANDU, DEC 10 - Minister for Land Reforms and Management Bhim Prasad Gautam on Saturday said the landless squatters living on the banks of Bagmati and surrounding rivers would be removed even if the government had to pay for their rents.
“After identifying genuine squatters, the encroached land would be vacated even if the government has to shift them in rented apartments,” said Gautam, speaking at a programme organised in the Capital. “The government has already directed the concerned sectors to make necessary arrangements for the same.”
He added that the government was waiting for the Appellate Court decision regarding the land encroachment by landless squatters before it could take further steps. Gautam, who is also a UCPN (Maoist) leader, expressed his commitment to empty the encroached lands even if the encroachers were Maoist cadres.
On the other hand, Chairman of the All Nepal Landless Squatters’ Association, Dipak Rai warned that the association would take stern steps if the government tries to forcefully vacate those lands. He accused the government of not showing interest to hold talks in order to resolve the issue.
