Dahal as coordinator of Lumbini project irks Buddhists
KATHMANDU, DEC 07 - Various groups and communities related to the Buddhist religion staged a protest in the Capital on Wednesday, protesting the UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s affiliation with the Lumbini Development Committee. They have demanded Dahal be removed from the position of Director of the Committee.
They demanded a person, who is not a follower of Buddhism, should not be appointed to the post.
“From the point of view of development, there are many Buddhist leaders who can take the leadership. More than these leaders, we have the knowledge about the rituals and other things required for its development,” Lakpa Sherpa, Vice President of Buddhist Community, said.
They have also issued a statement of appeal, saying the politicians were turning a religious site like Lumbini into an industry. They said such a move was a breach of the sanctity of the location.
Buddhism Preservation Committee took out the rally from Maitighar to New Baneshwor. They tried to draw the attention of the United Nations, saying a politician should not head a religious organisation.
The Lumbini Development Committee was formed by the government to develop Lumbini as a World Buddhist Tourism Destination.
Dahal, who is the coordinator of the Committee, has already met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on forming an international committee for the development of Lumbini under Ban.
