'Govt to install diesel plant to slash load shedding hrs'

KATHMANDU, DEC 06 -

Energy Minister Posta Bahadur Bogati has said that the government has been making efforts to decrease load shedding hours by installing new diesel plant and importing 100 Megawatts (MW) electricity from India.

The Energy Minister said the government has been making preparations for the same to slash load shedding hours in the winter season.

Speaking at an interaction in the Capital on Tuesday, Bogati informed that the proposal for the project will be put forth in the Cabinet meeting.

Also on the occasion, Bogati informed that efforts on expanding the capacity for the transmission line to increase power supply between Nepal and India is underway.

He said 100 MW electricity will be imported from India following the maintenance of the transmission line from Mujaffar to Bardibas.

Bogati said the government will be compelled to increase load shedding from 16 to 18 hours this year as well if it fails to install new diesel plant and import power supply from India.

He said the government has already held talks on buying diesel plant with Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun and added that the project will be finalised following discussion with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.

Saying that there is no alternative to install diesel plant at the present context to get rid of power crisis, the Energy Minister informed that maintenance of diesel plant in Biratnagar and Hetauda has been initiated and that it will be operated following discussion with the businessmen at the earliest.

Underscoring the need to increase electricity tariff, Bogati put forth his planning to slash load shedding from 4 to 5 hours a day to step-up the tariff.

He said, "Nepal Electricity Authority has been bearing Rs 2 to Rs 3 loss per unit, thus, tariff has to be revamped."
