Broadsheets may carry copies of statute draft

KATHMANDU, DEC 05 -

The Constituent Assembly (CA) is planning to team up with media outlets for publicising the first draft of the new constitution along with broadsheet dailies.

The effort is perceived as an attempt to ease public opinion collection over the draft for its revision before the promulgation of the constitution through the Assembly. CA Chairman Subas Nembang has instructed officials of the Parliament Secretariat to start preparations for collaboration with broadsheet dailies for the publication of the first draft.

Buyers of broadsheet dailies will also get a copy of the first draft of the constitution on a given day, if this plan materialises. The calendar endorsed by the Constitutional Committee on Sunday stipulates to bring out the first draft by March 5, 2012.

“The constitution requires the first draft to be published in the Nepal Gazette before collecting public opinion on it. We plan to make public opinion collection big by publishing the first draft along with broadsheet dailies after the draft is published in the gazette,” said an official.

The Public Opinion Collection Committee of the CA will form teams of lawmakers who will travel across the country for collecting people’s comments on the draft. According to the constitution-writing timeline, a public opinion campaign will be carried out between March 6 and March 28, 2012.

Opinions collected during the campaign will be accumulated and discussed in the CA before being forwarded to the Constitutional Committee to be a part of the final draft of the law of land.
