KATHMANDU, DEC 04 - Expressing strong reservations over the police intervention in protest against irregularities in Youth and Small Enterprises Self-Employment Fund (YSESEF), the Youth Association Nepal (YAN)—youth wing of the CPN-UML—has called for a Valley bandh on Tuesday (December 6) to press for the resignation of Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun.

Speaking at an interaction organised in the Reporter’s Club on Sunday, YAN Chairman Mahesh Basnet announced to enforce the general strike.

He informed that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai would be handed over a memorandum regarding the alleged irregularities in the YSESEF.

Likewise, the YAN would also file a case at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority demanding investigation into the case, Basnet added.

Accusing the police of using force in the YAN’s “peaceful protest” under the direction of Pun, Basnet declared “a war” against the finance minister.

He accused the UCPN (Maoist) leaders of being corrupt and said that his organisation will forever struggle against PM Bhattarai’s totalitarian government leadership.

He further warned to resort to nation-wide agitation if the government tries to repress YAN’s protest. Basnet also said that action would be taken against his party cadres only if their involvement in the irregularities was proven.

At the same programme, YSESEF Vice Chairman Punya Prasad Regmi claimed that the amount distributed by the fund would be reimbursed if it was found misappropriated. Stressing on the need for a new organising system in the YSESEF, Regmi opined that the distribution of the fund money should be carried out through government banks so as to curb such irregularities.

He claimed that the YSESEF had distributed money from the fund to Maoist lawmaker Chandra Bahadur Thapa and Saligram Jammarkatel as per the YSESEF rule.
