NEPALGUNJ, DEC 02 -

Pappu Lamatharu of Bardiya started worrying about his future following his discharge from the People’s Liberation Army. He dream to secure a better future got shattered after he was sent home packing last year. However, time has changed things drastically, as he is all set to make a new life for himself.

“I only had weapon skills. I hope my future will take a turn for the better after this training,” said Pappu, who is receiving training on automobile at Bheri Technical School (BTS) in Nepalgunj. He was discharged from the sixth division camp of the PLA at Dasharathpur, Surkhet.

While their colleagues are still struggling to start a new life, 13 former PLA combatants are taking job-oriented training courses at the school with a hope of rebuilding their life.

“The government should think about us. We do not have demands like those fighters who are opting for integration. Our concerns should be addressed,” he said.

Another discharged Jit Bahadur Chaudhary is on the same wavelength. The society’s attitude towards the discharged combatants hasn’t changed, he said. “I believe that discrimination against us will fade away once we take up businesses and become economically strong.”  The UN Interagency Rehabilitation Programme has been providing discharged combatants training on various micro entrepreneurial, business, health education and education. According to an estimate, 739 discharged combatants have availed of the training in Banke. BTS trainer Pemachhri Sherpa said most of those who underwent training here have started their own business.
