ROLPA, NOV 30 - UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that the number of People's Liberation Army (PLA) combatants to be integration can be increased to 9,000.

"We have taken initiative to increase the number for integration and parties could reach an agreement to this effect. It could reach up to 9,000," said Dahal, during his visit to the Fifth Division cantonment in Dahaban, Rolpa, on Wednesday.

The Maoist chairman, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, PLA commander Nanda Kishor Pun visited the cantonment along with some Special Committee members and Maoist leaders. The Maoist top brass set off for the cantonment visit in various parts of the country to placate some disgruntled PLA combatants close to the hard-line faction led by party Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya.

The cantonment source said that Dahal urged the PLA commanders not to obstruct the peace process. The Maoist leaders separately addressed the gathering of the commanders and directed them on the party's future strategies.

"They did not talk anything new. They returned just reiterating earlier assurances," said a PLA commander attending the meeting.

During the visit, PM Bhattarai asked the former Maoist fighters to help him complete the peace process. "There is no alternative to peace. You have supported me for the same and urge you to continue it in the days to come as well," he said.

The commanders close to Baidya faction expressed their dissatisfaction saying that the leadership was reluctant to listen to their demands.

Earlier, Dahal and PM Bhattarai, along with other team members, visited the Seventh Division cantonment at Talabanda in Kailali district as well. They inspected and monitored the ongoing regrouping process of the former Maoist fighters in the division.
