Sembu Secondary School in Taplejung district is facing tough times to lift spirits of students. Ever since its two-storey building was destroyed by the September 18 earthquake, the Phawakhola VDC based school has been running all classes in a single room.
School teacher Devi Narayan Bista said students of Grade 1 are taking classes together with the students of Nursery in one room. Same is the situation of Grade 2 and 3.
He said up to 65 students are crammed into the single room. Teachers are facing difficulty in imparting education in the jam-packed room. Similar is the situation of Mahendra Lower Secondary School at Lelep VDC-1. Here, classes are conducted on the playground due to lack of a building.
Teachers said classes cannot be smoothly conducted in temporary huts set up in many earthquake-hit schools in the district and new buildings have to be constructed
at the earliest. According to the District Education Office, out of 365 quake-hit school buildings, 348 rooms were completely destroyed and 548 partially. The district chapter of Nepal Red Cross Society has built temporary huts in 63 schools.
