Parties agree to extend CA tenure by 6 more months
KATHMANDU, NOV 29 -
The meeting of the top brass leaders of the major three political parties—UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML—and the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) agreed to extend the Constitution Assembly tenure by six more months. The present term of the CA is expiring tomorrow.
Emerging from the meeting at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction on Tuesday morning, Deputy Prime Minister and Maoist Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the meeting took the decision to this effect endorsing the proposal put forth by the four-member taskforce formed by the government to formulate the time-bound calendar on the constitution drafting process.
The taskforce had proposed to extend the CA tenure along with the implementation of the seven-point agreement, signed on Nov 1 among the major political parties, and intensify discussion on the formation of a national consensus government.
Minister Shrestha informed that the political parties have also come to terms on completing the works relating to the constitution drafting by a week, extending the deadline to complete the regrouping of Maoist combatants to Dec 15 from Nov 23, and implement the agreement to return the seized property at the earliest.
The major political parties have also agreed to intensify high-level talks for the formation of a national consensus government and draw the attention of the State Restructuring Commission to complete its work in the stipulated time frame.
The big three parties along with SLMM on Sunday formed a taskforce that would make a time-bound calendar for the constitution drafting.
