Pills shortage hits women

TAPLEJUNG, NOV 26 -

Pregnant women in Taplejung have been hit after distribution of iron pills was suspended around 15 days ago following reports of damaged medicines.

Health workers said pregnant women are returning empty-handed as the iron pills are not available in the health facilities.

“We are left with no option but to send them back empty-handed with an advice to take green vegetables as substitute,” said Assistant Health Worker Hari Narayan Mehata of Phamkuwa Sub-Health Post.

Another health worker said there are no signs of the supply resuming any time soon.

A pregnant woman of Kalikhola VDC said she is facing problems due to lack of the medicine.  “Each time I visit a health post nearby, I return empty-handed,” she said.

Health workers claim that pregnant women of more than 50 remote VDCs including Kalikhola, Aakhop, Olanchu-nggola and Yamphudin, are affected as there are no adequate health facilities in the areas and it takes more than four days for local villagers to go to the district headquarters for the medicine. District Public Health Officer Arun Kumar Jha said the resumption of the supplement’s supply was still uncertain.

“It is not only a problem in Taplejung. Biratnagar is also reeling under the scarcity of the medicine,” he said.
