PHSC okays 3 envoy nominees
KATHMANDU, NOV 25 - The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) on Friday approved names of proposed envoys to India, China and UAE.
The PHSC unanimously endorsed recommendations of Ram Karki, Mahesh Kumar Maskey and Dhanjaya Jha as ambassadors to India, China and UAE, respectively. Following the endorsement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) will send agrimo to the respective countries for approval.
Of the three, the UCPN (Maoist) appointed its members in two most important ambassadorial positions--in New Delhi and Beijing. Karki, a close aide to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and expert in international relations, was recommended as Nepal's envoy to France by the Maoist-led government in 2009. France offered an agrimo to Karki but his appointment was nixed by the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government.
Maskey, a medical doctor and leftist intellectual, is not a much known face in the diplomacy, while Jha is a senior joint secretary at the MoFA.
The Nepali mission in Delhi has been without its head since the second week of August. Former ambassador Rukma Shumsher Rana was recalled following reports that he was also working as the managing director of Dabur Nepal Pvt Ltd. The incumbent envoy to China, Tanka Karki, completes his four years in early 2012, while ambassador to UAE Arjun Bahadur Thapa's tenure expires in December.
