KATHMANDU, NOV 23 -

The taekwondo squad for the London Olympics qualifiers had been finalised six month ago, but due to Nepal Taekwondo Association’s weak financial conditions, only two out of the six selected players got a chance to travel for the qualifiers in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Only the four athletes - Manita Shahi, Ayesha Shkaya, Aashish Maharjan and Rohit Tamang - knew the plight of not being able to put their hard work to test. But they knew this  was not the end of the road.

They went back to their regular training schedule hoping that another chance will come their way. After six months of rigorous handwork, the four athletes have finally been given a chance to make it to the big stage. The Asian qualifiers in Thailand from Sunday will be their final attempt to book a berth in the Summer Games.

Of the four, a lot has been expected from Manita and Ayesha. “ They are best in Nepal,” said Nepal’s Korean coach Kwan Yong Dal. “They both have strength and speed in them. But the sad part is we did not have any international exposure during out training period.” The remaining players in the squad, Aashish and Rohit, like their female team-mates, lack international exposure, said Dal, adding, that they have are under tremendous pressure to deliver.

Manita will be competing in the 67kg weight group, while Ayesh will vie in the 75kg group. Aashish and Rohit will compete in the 68kg and 58kg respectively.
