Two held for document forgery
KATHMANDU, NOV 22 -
Two people, who were involved in the forgery of documents issued by government and non government organisations, have been caught by policemen who pretended to be their clients.
Personnel from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) of the Nepal Police arrested Achyut Neupane, 48, and Binod Koirala, 38, on Monday. The duo had been forging academic documents including School Leaving Certificates, citizenship certificates and papers that are issued by government agencies and universities.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police say, there is a fair chance that the culprits are involved in the forgery of land ownership papers as well. Such forgery is said to be in practice to siphon money out of financial institutions and to sell a piece of land to more than one person. A fake citizenship certificate issued in the name of Khem Raj Modan by District Administration Office Taplejung and counterfeit character certificate and mark-sheet issued by Padmodaya High School was recovered from the culprits. Police say the duo charged Rs 3,000 for a forged citizenship certificate and Rs 2,000 for a fake SLC certificate.
Their clients would contact them through young middlemen and the details for the papers to be forged would be exchanged as mobile text messages. Police say the final deal was made in and around New Baneshwor. Young middlemen were easy to employ as they needed money urgently whatever the amount.
The CIB has said the absence of security features on citizen certificates and university documents in Nepal had facilitated forgery without significant cost and technology.
The arrestees will face one to five years in prison or a fine ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 100,000.
