Major parties, SLMM meet ends inconclusively
KATHMANDU, NOV 21 -
A meeting between the major three political parties and the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) ended inconclusively on Monday.
The meeting failed to yield any outcome after some of the aligned parties of the SLMM opposed the SRC formation, its size and rights.
The meeting was held to finalise the jurisdiction of the State Restructuring Commission as per the two-point agreement signed late on Friday night between the UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and the SLMM, outlining a clear mandate for the commission assuring both Indigenous lawmakers and Madhesi parties that their aspirations will not be trampled upon.
According to the agreement, the government was given the responsibility to form such a commission within three days mandating it to prepare a report on the modality of state restructuring within two months.
Earlier, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik Chairman Bijay Kumar Gachhadhar had agreed for the SRC formation.
Contrasting to Gachhadhar, MJF-Ganatantrik Chairman and Minister for Information Jay Prakash Gupta has condemned the SRC formation.
However, the big three parties submitted the name list of the members from the party to be inducted in the commission at the meeting today.
The Interim Constitution 2007 has envisaged such a commission to recommend possible ways for state restructuring.
The commission, though proposed in the Interim Constitution itself, had long been at the heart of controversy on state restructuring as the parties differed on its need at the first place and later on its terms of reference.
