RAUTAHAT, NOV 17 -

An awful spectre of domestic violence has reared its ugly head in Rautahat. According to the District Police Office, 29 women fell prey to this social pandemic in the past one-and-a-half years in the district.

Out of the 47 registered cases related to dowry, polygamy and domestic brawl, 11 deaths are associated with dowry, police said. Among 20 cases of killing, 12 convicted murderers were booked and the remaining are still on the run, said Inspector Madhu Kumar Thapa.

Recently, 22-year-old Kiran Sah of Chandranigahapur VDC-5 was killed by her husband and mother-in-law for not paying Rs 30,000, the remaining part of Rs 200,000 promised in dowry. Both her husband and father-in-law are doing time.

In a similar incident, Rambhajan Sah with the help of his father Patilal and mother Laledevi killed his 19-year-old wife, Manjudevi Sah, of Santapur VDC-6 for “not bringing dowry” during their marriage on January 27. Patilal and Laledevi are in jail, but Rambhajan is still at large.

District based human rights activists say cases of domestic violence against women are on the rise in Rautahat. It is mainly because of the rising culture of impunity, said activist Bipin Gautam.

Those who were behind promoting domestic violence at Rajpur Pharahadawa, Auraiya, Inarbari, Hardiya Paltuwa and Laukaha VDCs are said to be still on the run. Police are searching for them, said Inspector Thapa.
