POKHARA, NOV 16 -

The city of Pokhara is hosting another international event immediately after the completion of the Safal Cup Pokhara. The next event will be bigger and will probably be followed by a larger international

audience than the event that is taking place now, as more than 200 participants from 38 countries will be arriving in Pokhara for the Roving Race, the fourth edition of the famous Racing the Planet.

This is the first time the race has come to a mountainous region after leaving its track in Vietnam, Namibia and Australia. The participants will set out on November 20 on a seven-day, 250-kilometer course through villages, ancient tracks and over rivers in the spectacular Annapurna region, reaching up to 3,200 meters in altitude and will

follow the same format as world renowned four desert series, where competitors will have to carry all of their equipment and food. “This promises to be a remarkable race,” said Racing The Planet founder, Mary Gadams. “Nepal is a beautiful country, which brings together so many qualities of a great RacingThePlanet event: breath-taking landscapes, a diversity of technical terrains and a culture that competitors can fully immerse themselves in,” he said.

Amid the mighty competition, all eyes will be on top contender Ryan Sandes. The South African made history in 2010 when he was the first person to win all four deserts races. Ryan recently won the Leadville 100 in the United States.

Other strong contenders include Sean W. Abbott and Ryan Bennett of the United States. Legendary Marshall Ulrich, who was hailed as the “Endurance King” by Outside Magazine, also competes in one of six teams.

The women’s field is also compelling with several past champions competing including: Sissel Smaller of Norway, winner of the female division of the Atacama Crossing 2006, who counts summiting Mount Everest amid her list of accomplishments; Mirjana Pellizzer of Croatia, who earned the title of 4 Deserts Female Champion in 2010; and Canada’s Stephanie Case who won the women’s division of RacingThePlanet: Vietnam in 2008.
