Teen fakes his abduction
KATHMANDU, NOV 16 -
A Plus Two student, who faked his own abduction, has been arrested by
the police.
Birendra Bahadur Shahi, a 19-year-old student of Rehdon College, Samakhusi, was arrested a day after he pretended that he was kidnapped to get Rs 1 million from his family.
Shahi had left for his college at 8 am on Monday. The same day, unidentified people had called his wife in Kalikot and asked her to come at a place between Swoyambhu and Tahachal in Kathmandu with Rs 1 million. At 11:25 pm, Shahi’s Brother-in-law, Bharat Malla informed police about the incident.
However, his plan fizzled out as police arrested him on Tuesday and revealed that he faked his own abduction. After the arrest, Shahi told the police that he did so “out of frustration with his study and was in need of some money to start a retail business”.
“Shahi has a record of being a good student. Although his results in the eleventh grade are not out yet he has scored 77 percent in SLC examinations from a government school in Kalikot,” said DSP Somendra Singh Rathore at Metropolitan Police Crime Division.
“Shahi’s family is not so rich. However, financial status of his brother-in-law Malla is good. Shahi had planned that the money for his release would come from Malla,” added Rathore.
Police have ruled out Shahi’s indulgence in drugs and gambling habits, which lead many college going youths to resort to desperate measures to
gain money.
