Quake victims living in cave
TAPLEJUNG, NOV 15 -
A cave in Taplejung district has turned into the home of a family displaced by the September 18 earthquake.
The 10-member family of Makardhoj Pantawa of Khejenim VDC-3 has been living in the rock cave near the Tamor river, which was once used by his ancestors as an animal shed.
“We are living in the cave after our house was destroyed by the earthquake. There is no space left for us to erect a hut,” said Makardhoj’s wife, Jogmaya. He said authorities have not visited the quake-hit area so far. The Makardhoj family received only some cash and a tent as immediate relief. “Government officials provided Rs 3,000, a tent, 25 kg rice and two kg pulses,” Makardhoj said.
Their harsh living conditions under the rock is aggravated by the arrival of the winter. They sleep on a large straw mat and frayed bed sheets. “A chill in the air from the river trembles us. We also fear that our children may drown in the river,” said Jogmaya.
A lone breadwinner Makardhoj said their agricultural production is enough for only one month. The quake-hit family is waiting for relief from the state side.
