‘PM trying to derail peace process by expanding Cabinet'
TEHRATHUM, NOV 08 - Nepali Congress (NC) leader Sujata Koirala has accused the government of attempting to derail the peace process by expanding the Cabinet.
Koirala said that the unilateral decision of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to induct more ministers would have a negative effect on the peace process at a time when Congress has been proposing the formation of a national unity government under the leadership of her party.
Speaking at a program organised by Terhathum chapter of Nepal Press Union in Terhathum on Tuesday, Koirala came down heavily upon UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal, NC leaders Ram Sharan Mahat and Minendra Rijal, who instead of working for the peace process went for foreign visit.
“The meeting of the Special Committee on Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants could not take place due to the absence of Mahat and Rijal who are the members of the special committee,” she said.
She also vented her ire at Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal for going to the US citing Lumbini development instead of working for the peace process. She said, “Which is more important, peace process or Lumbini development?”
Furthermore, she accused the Maoists of trying to stall the peace process on various pretexts.
Claiming that the next government would be formed under the leadership of Congress, Koirala warned that the country would fall into an unprecedented crisis if that does not happen.
Koirala said that the Maoist was only staging a drama by vowing to return the seized properties to the rightful owners.
“They sign the deal with the political parties and capture the paddy of the farmers in the village,” she said, adding, “They should implement the deal instead of only signing it.”
She also said that the four-point deal, signed between the Maoists and the Madhes-based parties prior to the election of Bhattarai as the new prime minister, and the seven-point deal signed among the major political parties, were wrong.
