NOV 04 -
The United States on Tuesday hailed a deal reached in Nepal to conclude a five-year peace process, calling on leaders to implement the agreement and turn the page on a lengthy political deadlock.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland described the agreement -- under which the former monarchy's army would incorporate 6,500 of 19,000 former Maoist rebels -- as "landmark."
"We encourage all those involved to implement these agreements. The United States remains committed to supporting the ongoing peace process as appropriate," she said in a statement.
"We commend all parties for their statesmanship and leadership in forging this consensus, which we believe is a crucial step toward ensuring a democratic, stable and prosperous future for Nepal," she added.
Nepal's civil war ended in 2006 after a decade of fighting that left 16,000 people dead. But initial optimism at home and abroad has been tempered by political infighting and a stand off in reaching a new constitution.
In the political agreement, Nepal's largest factions recommitted to a goal of reaching a new constitution by November 30.
