Maoist hardliners won’t hinder peace deal: Sitaula
KATHMANDU, NOV 02 -
Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula, one of the key interlocutors in the peace negotiations since the 12-point agreement, has said that the Maoist hardliners would not create any problem in implementing the seven-point deal.
Speaking at the Reporter’s Club in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Sitaula said though it was an internal matter of the UCPN (Maoist) how to handle the disgruntlements of the Mohan Baidya faction, he did not see any reason for any force to oppose the hard-earned deal that aims at concluding the peace process. “The deal has nothing new in principle. It is simply a reiteration of the commitment to implement the past pacts, from the Comprehensive Peace Accord to Interim Constitution and other recent deals singed between the parties,” Sitaula said. “If one accepts the Interim Constitution, the peace accord and other past pacts, there is no point in objecting the new deal singed on Tuesday.”
Sitaula also said that the central focus of the NC would be in implementing the deal and it would not discuss on any power sharing issues, including on formation of a new consensus government until the peace process advances to certain irreversible point.
Sitaula said the deal came to fruition after a long and tireless effort of all the major political parties and the achievement cannot be attributed to a single person. “All three leaders, Maoist Chiarman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal demonstrated flexibility going one step above their respective parties’ official position.”
